Frizzy Hair Home Remedies

Fighting frizzy hair can feel like a never ending battle.

And a very expensive one!!

As we fork out over and over again for fancy frizzy hair remedies that promise us silky, smooth locks but fail to free us from the endless bad hair days of unmanageable crazy frizz we just can’t do anything with.

I have though, finally found some frizzy hair home remedies that really have helped.

Now that doesn’t mean my hair is ever going to be an advertisement for lusciously thick, smooth locks but it is unbelievably healthier than it was. It is stronger, shinier and much less dry and it only needs washing once a week.

So what is the big secret?

Well some great DIY frizzy hair treatments have helped but the real breakthrough was understanding what was actually causing my frizzy hair and that was my supposedly super healthy diet which turned out to be not very healthy at all!!

Sorting out my diet healed my hair from the inside so the other remedies could let it shine.

So if you have been fighting a losing battle to tame your tresses do check out this guide to frizzy hair home remedies. It is not – I promise you – just the standard frizzy hair tips you have read a thousand times before but really does get to the bottom of the huge role diet and hormones play in the health of our hair and how to fix them.

There’s also some fabulous DIY masks for nourishing and repairing frizzy hair PLUS super quick everyday hairstyles for hair that however healthy will never be ramrod straight.

I do hope you find the guide helpful. I would love to hear your thoughts. And for more simple healthy living tips do check out my other natural remedies that cover everything from natural beauty treatments to gut health and headaches.

What Causes Frizzy Hair?

What Causes Frizzy Hair

It can feel like we’ve drawn the short straw with our frizzy hair genes. And certainly some hair is more prone to be frizzy and never will be stereotypically straight and smooth.

It does not have to be, to be stunning!!

But problem frizz is usually far more to do with damage both to our hair and to our bodies.

All sorts of hair styling and treatments can obviously cause frizziness including :

  • Washing way too often
  • Harsh shampoos full of sulfates
  • Alcohol and silicone based products that dry hair
  • Long term colouring
  • The wrong brushes and combs for our type of hair
  • Heat based styling

We know all of this stuff.

But many of us don’t realise that frizzy hair is also a big red flag warning us of damage inside our bodies caused by crazily imbalanced hormones and massive nutritional deficiencies.

Do Hormones Cause Frizzy Hair?

Do Hormones Cause Frizzy Hair

Our hormones play a big role in the health of our hair.

They impact how much hair grows, how quickly it grows and how much we shed. But also the quality and texture of our hair. Many of us are aware of this from changes in our hair quality in puberty, pregnancy and perimenopause and during our menstrual cycle.

However, it is not just oestrogen and progesterone that are the issue.

Imbalances in our levels of insulin, cortisol and thyroid hormones can also cause coarse, frizzy hair. So a simple hormone balancing diet is one of the best ways to truly tame our frizz long term.

And it doesn’t have to be complicated. It just means focusing on nutrition we’re running short on and enjoying loads of the super healthy food that helps with frizzy hair.

What Food Helps With Frizzy Hair?

What Food Helps With Frizzy Hair

Getting plenty of vitamins A, C, D and E plus folic acid (B9) are essential for strong, healthy hair.

Luckily it is super simple to get enough of these. We just need every day to enjoy :

  • A couple of helpings of green leafy veg
  • A good mix of bright colourful fruit and veg i.e. the oranges, reds, yellows and purples
  • AND plenty of time outdoors for vitamin D

Often forgotten magnesium is also essential because it balances our hormones.

But there is some other nutrition many of us with frizzy hair are super short on including :

  1. Iron – huge numbers of women are iron deficient.
  2. Zinc
  3. Biotin (B7)
  4. B12 (Cobalamin)
  5. Omega 3

They all play a massive role in how our body uses protein to build healthy new cells including our hair and coarse frizzy hair can be a big sign we are short on these five minerals.

And deficiency in these five often goes hand in hand – especially if we are vegan or vegetarian – with protein deficiency. It is very easy to think we get enough when we don’t.

As a very long time vegetarian I was chronically short on all these. Sorting out my diet has made the biggest difference to the quality and manageability of my hair.

We can get iron, zinc, biotin, B12, omega 3 and protein from green vegetables, nuts, seeds and pulses in a vegetarian or vegan diet but my goodness, it is hard work. And much of the time, popping supplements doesn’t make good our shortfall.

If you are vegetarian or vegan I have got a big guide to iron rich foods which includes sections on iron rich diets for vegans and vegetarians but the hard truth is the best sources of iron, zinc, biotin, B12 and omega 3 that we can easily absorb are :

  • Red meat and especially organ meat or what us Brits call offal e.g. liver, heart, kidneys
  • Shell fish including oysters, mussels, whelks, clams
  • Eggs
  • Oily fish e.g. mackerel, herring, sardines, trout, salmon

Even meat eaters can be seriously short on these nutrients. White meat – and especially factory farmed chicken – just doesn’t pack the nutritional punch of organ meat, shell fish and mackerel.

If like me you have been short on these key nutrients for years and years it does take a terrible toll on our hair and if we really want to tame our frizz we have need to make good what we’re short on.

To rapidly boost your iron levels naturally check out this guide to food highest in iron and use these lists to find foods richest in zinc, biotin and B12

You really will notice the difference and the brilliant thing is, by boosting our hair on the inside we get much more benefit from all these other tips and treatments frizzy hair.

Basic Tips To Get Rid Of Frizzy Hair

How To Get Rid Of Frizzy Hair

The best basic tips for getting rid of frizzy hair – once we’ve sorted out our hormones and diet – are all about keeping moisture in whilst preventing more damage.

I am sure you will have heard many of these tips before but they are worth recapping.

Each of them may only make a little bit of difference individually but together they add up.

Keeping Moisture In

Key tips for keeping moisture in our hair include :

  • Wash hair less frequently – 3 times a week max but aim to get down to once a week if you can
  • Use cool to tepid water
  • Use a sulphate free shampoo
  • Avoid products with alcohol and silicone
  • Alternate shampoos to prevent build up that stops moisturising treatments from getting through
  • Don’t blow dry soaking wet hair – let it dry as much as possible naturally so you reduce time exposed to styling heat

Preventing More Damage

And simple tips for preventing more damage to frizzy hair are :

  • Cut hair regularly to prevent split ends
  • Brush dry hair as little as possible
  • Use a wider tooth comb
  • Or use a boar bristle brush at night to help stimulate scalp and hair and then loosely braid to let it relax over night
  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillow
  • Blot hair dry with an old t-shirt, don’t rub with a harsh towel

From my experience these tips work for just about all frizzy hair whether properly curly or only ever so slightly kinked. But it then gets more complicated as lots of the tips for fizzy hair treatment are really for curly rather than those of us who just have a wiry, bird’s nest of a mess!!!

If you have got curly hair the Curly Girl Method is a must know.

The Curly Girl Method

Curly Girl Method For Dry Frizzy Hair

If by any chance you haven’t heard about it the Curly Girl Method has been around since the early 2000s and is basic a completely different approach to caring for curly hair to prevent it frizzing.

The key changes are to :

  • Ditch all sulphate based shampoos
  • To “co-wash” which basically means washing with conditioner – it’s a similar idea to oil cleansing skin.
  • Focus on washing your scalp rather than hair
  • Seriously saturate hair with conditioner once washed
  • Use wide tooth comb to detangle hair whilst conditioner still in
  • Then scrunch conditioner in before rinsing
  • Once rinsed lightly blot hair with old t shirt to stop dripping
  • Add a silicone free gel to gently style
  • If you must blow dry use a diffuser

If you haven’t tried it before for your frizzy curls check out this curly girl method 101.

I found some of the curly girl method tips super helpful even though my hair is a super fine birds nest rather than gorgeously curly. But for me the thing that was missing was the really nutritious ingredients we can add to home remedies that really nurture and nourish frizzy hair after years and years of poor diet damage.

Pre Wash Treatments

Oils can be massaged into the scalp and the end of the hair and then left for 30 minutes as pre wash treatment. Coconut oil treatments can be especially helpful if you have a child with very tangly frizzy hair that it is impossible to brush without tears :

Coconut oil is also a great DIY treatment for dandruff. But if your hair is not thick enough to take coconut oil you can just add naturally anti-fungal tea tree oil to your pre-wash treatment to get rid of dandruff.
