Who knew there could be so many variations on a kitchen spoon? Wooden spoons, ladles, slotted spoons, pasta spoons not to mention ten different kinds of spatula! Let go of those you never use. And enjoy the space ... #clutterfree #simplicity #organized #minimalist #just10things #happierwithout

I have a big pot on my work top.

Right by the stove.

So I can easily grab a wooden spoon or ladle.

Really handy. Except it’s NOT!

Or at least it wasn’t.

Because it was rammed full of lord knows how many variations on a spoon and a spatula.

And I couldn’t get anything out in a hurry without yanking everything else out all over the floor. And shouting blue murder.

Hmmm …

All those variations on the same thing were meant to be more convenient.

But as with so much of our clutter, more IS less!

More actually just gets in the way. Mostly.

So today in our just 10 things declutter we’re saying NO to more and letting go of some spoons and spatulas and the like which basically do the same thing.

If you’re following along with my quick daily declutter, read on. BUT if you’re new do hop back and read how just 10 things can help you declutter easily.

Just 10 Things – Spoons & Spatulas

As always we stick to our 5 rules and …

  1. Take 5 minutes or so – 15 minutes MAX
  2. Focus on the place we keep our spoons & spatulas – a drawer, jar or rack
  3. Open our eyes to unused, unloved stuff
  4. And without yanking things out
  5. Spot anything we’re ready to let go

We’re going to look out for …

  • Multiples – go on ‘fess up, how many wooden spoons have you got?
  • Tiny variations on the same thing

And let go of any of these spoons and spatulas and the like we will be happier without

  1. Wooden spoons
  2. Slotted spoons
  3. Spatulas
  4. Tongs
  5. Mashers
  6. Whisks – I confess I had 4 but use a fork!
  7. Ladles
  8. Slotted turner
  9. Pasta server
  10. Meat tenderiser

Get anything you’re ready to let go straight into your charity bag. Or the bin if it’s broken.

Don’t fret about what you’re NOT ready to lose.

Decluttering just a few unloved things daily builds our strength to tackle the big stuff.

But for a little nudge to help you let go of a little more – today or tomorrow – read on.

A Little Nudge

Common mental blocks when we’re letting go of spoons and spatulas and the like are:

  • It’s hassle to stop cooking & wash things up
  • Having just the right tool for the job helps

It’s hassle to stop and wash up

It’s easy to think it’s more convenient not to have to wash up whilst cooking but …

  • Is it really a hassle to take 10 seconds to rinse a ladle or a flipper?
  • Isn’t it more hassle trying to ram too much into the dishwasher?
  • And to wash everything over because it didn’t run properly?

Having just the right tool for the job helps

Sometimes just the right tool really makes a difference but …

  • Do I really use all the different ones?
  • Or just stick to my favourite over and over?
  • Does it make enough difference to be worth the hassle of an overflowing drawer in which I can’t find the thing I need easily?
